A food tour in Athens, Greece, is a journey through history, culture, and unforgettable flavors. This walking experience begins at Omonia Square, one of the city's most vibrant central squares, where modern Athens meets its rich past. From there, we dive straight into the heart of the Greek culinary tradition.
Our first stop introduces one of Greece's most iconic street foods: souvlaki. Freshly grilled skewers of juicy meat wrapped in warm pita bread with tomatoes and onions, create the perfect introduction to authentic Athenian flavors. Along the way, we sample traditional pies, including the famous bougatsa, a crispy phyllo pastry filled with sweet custard or savory cheese — a beloved Greek comfort food.
As we walk towards Kotzia Square, we taste high-quality Greek olives and fragrant local honey, learning about their importance in Mediterranean cuisine and Greek history. The tour then continues to the historic Varvakeios Central Municipal Market (Varvakeios Market), the city's main food market. Here, among bustling vendors and colorful stalls, we explore fresh produce, herbs, cheeses, meats, and seafood while enjoying small bites of traditional meze — a variety of flavorful small dishes meant for sharing.
No Greek culinary experience would be complete without drinks. We raise a glass of tsipouro, a traditional distilled spirit, and sample carefully selected Greek wine, discovering the country's ancient winemaking heritage.
