Medieval villages of Les Baux de Provence, the immersive experience of Carrières de Lumière

OohProvence

Book online - full day private tour Explore medieval villages like Les Baux de Provence; immerse yourself in the captivating world of Carrières de Lumière (Carrières of Light); discover St Remy de Provence’s rich cultural heritage with tastings of local cuisine including olives and olive oil at our partner producer Domaine Jolibois – this small boutique winery embodies authentic provencal lifestyle values; finally enjoy some relaxation during your vineyard tour through Domaine de La Vallongue vineyards which cover over 400 hectares along the slopes of les Alpilles mountains near both Eygalieres and St Remy de Provence. The perched village of Les Baux sits dramatically atop an ancient rock face. This walled hillside town has been voted among the top tourist attractions in all of Provence for good reason—its charmingly tight winding stone paths lead right up to impressive chateau ruins high above. The noble house of Baux held sway here since the ninth century until their domain came under provincial control in 1426 before becoming French territory altogether by 1481. We will explore both the quaint little village below and also climb up to see what remains of the once mighty fortress walls. Just down the road lies another highlight of today’s itinerary —the former limestone mine known now as Carrière des Lumières or Quarry of Lights. Once just a dusty pit left abandoned after centuries of quarrying activity but given fresh purpose starting back in the sixties due largely to the creative vision of renowned director/artist Jean Cocteau. Today however these cavernous spaces are used instead for hosting large scale multimedia exhibitions showcasing artworks loaned annually by major museums around Europe across approximately 7500 square meters of space within those massive underground chambers. Each show features not only paintings but often includes music too creating quite literally multisensory experiences designed to evoke emotions associated specifically with particular artists whose lives and work form themes central to respective exhibits. After lunch we head off towards yet another gem hidden away amongst rolling countryside vistas south east of Aix en Provence called St Remy de Provence itself home to many fine examples traditional architecture alongside more modern developments catering equally well toward tourists seeking respite amidst natural beauty combined urban amenities alike! Here you can sample exquisite extra virgin olive oils made onsite using methods passed down generations deep roots firmly planted squarely inside heartland proper province Alpes de Haute Provence region boasting Appellation d Originée Contrôlée status meaning quality guaranteed according to strict regulations governing such matters ensuring authenticity consistency excellence every single drop poured forth lovingly crafted hands skilled artisans dedicated preserving culinary traditions while embracing change necessary progress forward times ever changing...
