Lisbon of the Navigators

Lisbon of the Navigators We invite visitors to discover the Lisbon of adventurers, of navigators who in the 15th century decided to leave land behind and venture across the Atlantic Ocean in the hope of finding new, unexplored lands. Portugal’s contribution to the geography of the world as it exists today is enormous. By choosing to gaze towards the horizon and heed the call to adventure into the unknown, they connected lands and oceans and helped take knowledge far beyond what had been previously imagined. We invite visitors to explore this magnificent part of Lisbon, which served as the starting point for these courageous adventurers. In the Belém neighborhood, you will find several symbols of the great Portuguese Empire of the 15th century, including the Jerónimos Monastery, constructed at the start of the century. It stands as the most significant emblem of Portugal’s power at the time. Within its walls lie the tombs of notable figures like Vasco da Gama, the navigator who discovered the maritime route to India, along with King Manuel I, King John III, and the renowned poet Luís de Camões. You can also visit the Tower of Belém, originally built to defend the city against invaders but later becoming a powerful symbol during the Age of Discovery. Constructed in the early 16th century, it guarded the entrance to the city. Another landmark worth visiting is the Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos). Erected in the mid-20th century, this structure honors the explorers and their pivotal role in shaping Portugal’s legacy during the Age of Discovery.
